Kathy Bole

Hi, I’m Kathy Bole, I am a Labour Councillor for Suffolk County Council.

I have about 30 years in the Trade Union movement. I have been co-chair of UNISON’s Eastern Region Disabled Members Committee, a member of UNISON’s National Disabled Members Committee and I also run a charity that provides a voice for disabled people in Suffolk.

I contributed to the DEAL Handbook, belong to Momentum and DPAC. I am passionate about campaigning for the rights of Disabled People and I believe disabled people are uniquely qualified to help design the services that we use.   I also believe we need to challenge antiquated ideas of what it is to live a full and independent life.

We need to change the way disabled people can participate. We need to make use of technology to enable equal access to conferences and meetings. No one should be excluded on the basis of their disability or by economic inequality.

This is an exciting time to ensure the Labour Party becomes more inclusive and better represent the reality of disabled people living in Britain.

Please support the DEAL Team of candidates, for an open and accountable DL – campaigning for all disabled people

Simon Lydiard

I joined the Labour Party 36 years ago. I have held various offices, including Constituency Secretary and Vice Chair, Political Education Officer, and Branch Secretary and Chair. I have also been a councillor, and led the opposition Labour Group on Bath City Council in the early 90s.

I joined the civil service aged 16 at the most junior grade, and retired two years ago as a senior civil servant. I retired partially on health grounds, having been seriously injured some years previously whilst on duty – necessitating a series of operations, and impacting on my mobility and general health. I am dyslexic and dyspraxic – and was passionate about ensuring fair treatment of people with disabilities in the civil service, serving on my Department’s disability committee, and mentoring others with disabilities. I was also a trade union representative.

Both before and after retirement I have undertaken a number of voluntary activities to advance the cause of people with disabilities, including acting as an ambassador for a national charity and helping to create Disability Rights UK’s Leadership Academy, and mentoring participants.

I am standing in solidarity with other colleagues from Disability Equality Act Labour.

Lorraine Harding

I am a single parent who lives with a number of hidden disabilities.

I am currently unemployed and am on ESA. Before being unable to work I have worked in catering, retail, a library assistant, the civil service, call centres and as a community care worker. Through out my working life I have always been an active union member and have been involved in many different roles, from being a shop steward, to branch secretary, to an equalities officer.

I have a wide range of skills which include, but not limited to: arranging conferences, working in and managing a diverse team, production of written reports, minute secretary and campaigns organiser. I can work collaboratively and independently. I can and do consult and listen to others but will make a hard decision if needed.

I joined the Labour Party two years ago and since then I have been active within my branch and CLP. I was re-elected (unopposed) as the equalities officer this year. I have been elected as a delegate to 2018 conference.

I am a member of Unite.

I seek your support for this election and for the other candidates on the DEAL platform.

Nico Pollen

I am a retired mental health worker, psychotherapist and dramatherapist. I have worked with people with learning disabilities ,asylum severs, victims of torture and homeless people.

As a member of the Patient and Public Involvement Forum for for a Mental Health Trust, I have been involved in policy making.

I am currently volunteering with a therapeutic music making project for people with a wide range of disabilities.

I have struggled with depression for most of my adult life, and have recently been affected by hearing loss. I have recent personal experience of the failure of the mental health system to provide crisis care. I care for a partner with disabilities.

Prior to my health work, I was a systems analyst and project leader in Data Processing for a wide range of organisations and I wrote the equal opportunities statement for a charity.

Through my work, and personal experience, I have become painfully aware of the limitations of the health, social care and benefits systems, especially, but not exclusively, for people with mental health issues, learning disabilities, and long term illness or disability.

I am proud to be standing as part of the DEAL team for accountability and change in DL.

Dave Townsend

I am an enthusiastic campaigner and want real change in our Party and Communities. Currently I am Chair and Disability Officer of Weston-super-Mare Constituency Labour Party .

I am medically retired, but from my previous employment as a Marine Engineer and as a Health and Safety Officer I bring a wide knowledge of legislation relating to Health and Safety, Project Management, Dealing with Central Government, engaging with people, and navigating. I have good organisational skills, and a wide range of ancillary skills such as computing and information technology.

I have direct experience in provision for children with Special Educational Needs. I have experience of contact with both Adult & Children’s Social Services and Occupational Therapy teams.

One of my children is trans-gender and another is Gender Non-binary, both have disabilities too. Though them I have also become far more knowledgeable about the issues of discrimination and lack of support for the Disabled LGBT community.

Through my own disabilities, my involvement with Disability Labour, Disability Equality Act Labour and other campaigning groups I have gained wider experience of Disability Rights, inclusivity and equality; this has become my main passion in politics.

I’m a life-long Socialist re-joining Labour eight years ago and a member of Disability Labour for three years. I was born with disabilities which didn’t become apparent till my teens. Having the genetic disorder Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and an endocrine autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s. I also have Aspergers and dyslexia.

Nevertheless I qualified as a nurse, an SRN, and worked for several years covering many fields including coronary care and specialist children’s nursing at GOSH. Until my own health problems forced me to retire.

But I believe this background has given me a vast amount of experience and understanding of the many issues the disabled face, both adult and children and their carers, within our society.

I’m an active campaigner in my CLP of Hackney South who’s not afraid to be vocal!
I’m our Disabilty Coordinator, a positon I pressed for on our EC for to ensure disabled members are able to get fully involved and that their views and concerns are reflected and listened to.

I’m a member of DPAC and Unite Community.

As an Executive member I will continue to fight for the rights for disabled within the Labour Party and our communities. For The Many!

Please support the DEAL team of candidates, for an open and accountable DL – campaigning for all disabled people.

Fran Springfield

I’m Fran Springfield a Specialist Nurse in Acquired Disability, therapist and Medico-Legal Expert.

I’m the Disability Officer for Vauxhall CLP, a contributor to to the DEAL Handbook and a Momentum member. I’m a UNISON & DPAC member too.

I have both visible and invisible disabilities.

I have the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be an Executive member and Chair of DL. Within my career I have run an international charity for transgendered people as well managing care homes and supported living schemes. Everywhere I worked I was able to increase client and resident involvement.

We need to change the way disabled members are treated at all levels of the Party. We need better access, more reasonable adjustments and improved communication, both online and at meetings and conferences. We need spaces that disabled people and those who are non neuro-typical can use as safe or quiet spaces.

The Democracy Review is a wonderful opportunity for us be at the heart of everything the Party does. I want to enable disabled people in the Party to be part of that change.

Please support the DEAL team of candidates, for an open and accountable DL – campaigning for all disabled people.

Election of Executive Officers by Disability Labour Members

Disability Labour acknowledges the wishes of its members to elect Officers to the Executive Committee.

Disability Labour therefore resolves to make the following change to the Disability Labour Constitution – Clause E(1) of the Constitution be changed to read:

“Officers of the group shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting with a ballot of members to elect two Co-Chairs, two Deputy Chairs, Secretary, Deputy Secretary Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer, as well as any other officer deemed relevant to the Aims and Objects of the group. These officers shall hold these positions until the beginning of the following AGM. All positions may be ‘job shared’ where desired if agreed by the AGM.”

This change to be effective immediately.
